February 19

Introduction Post

It feels like it's been forever since I last posted.  I've been super sick with a lung infection since Valentine's Day so I've been sleeping an exorbitant amount which really cuts into my arting. I'm still working though, I promise.  Here, look!  Here's a few things I'm working on.  Not finished just yet, as you can tell.  The barrel is more or less done.  It is just a barrel, after all.

I'm going to render the little placard on the crate but leave it blank; I intend to use decals so I can change the contents.

Valentine's Day

Introduction Post

Nothing special today, ha!  I might do something fun tomorrow for Valentine's.

Until then, I made some tweaks to my floor texture after receiving some critiques on Polycount.  I darkened the overall texture, added some color variation to some of the planks, and overlaid some dark spots randomly.  Looks much better, but still a bit noisy.  I might see how it looks if I randomize the length of some of the beams, which will allow me to get rid of some of those nails.

Here's what it looked like before.

February 13

Introduction Post

I finished some wooden planks today.  I might return later to add more slashes and whatnot, maybe paint in a bolt or something on each metal strip.  Since tons of stuff in my scene is wooden, I'm trying to break it all up while trying to keep a functional appearance.  Metal trim never hurts.

The stairs aren't done yet; the rails are a different part of the texture.  That'll be for tomorrow.

February 10

Introduction Post

So, I have like a ton of wood in my tavern scene.  I needed to find a relatively formulaic system to make a wood texture so all my stuff will look similar, and I think I found one that I'm satisfied with.  Here's the first of a bunch of other stuff made of wood:

I think I will put some metal bands going around the barrel portion to break up the fact that this asset is 100% wood.  Maybe some nails or something too.

February 6

Introduction Post

Alright!  I got most of the assets in place and most of the base colors set.  I started painting some stuff but it was getting late so I figured I would wait till tomorrow to really dive in.  I put some real simple grain on the steps and support beams.  Obviously, I have a long way to go still but I'm super excited to continue refining all the textures!  In lieu of texturing I messed around with some basic lighting and super subtle fog (not present in image).

The toon shader that comes with Unity does not receive shadows which is a huge bummer so I had to change a lot of my surface objects (floors, walls) to a different shader in order for shadows to show up properly.  I might poke around the Asset Store for some better shaders.

Tavern Update 3

Introduction Post

Heyyy it's been a few days.  I reorganized my Unity scene and designed another floor plan for the tavern.  This one is much smaller, but it works out better that way.  I feel that I will be able to comfortably fit all my content in without leaving too much empty space but at the same time keep that tavern-y feel.

I'm nearly finished with my flat color block-in, at which point I will have several weeks worth of painting ahead of me; which is great, because I have been seriously slacking with my daily hand paintings over the last week or two.

February 1

Introduction Post

Modeled and unwrapped a bunch of stuff today, including a modular staircase I can orient any which way I please.  I think I've decided on a floor plan for the tavern; it seems interesting enough, but I might just go back and move some stuff around, maybe get away from the rectangular feel I have right now.

I'm going to start putting more assets in place then I'll start slapping on the base colors and see how everything reads.  Tons of temporary stuff for now.
